AMD’s ‘Shanghai’ Processor Looks to Counter Intel’s Nehalem

By Scott Ferguson

On the eve of the Intel Developer Forum, AMD executives said the company’s 45-nanometer Shanghai processor will enter the market by the fourth quarter of 2008. The AMD processor is designed to compete against the Intel Nehalem processor, especially in the volume two-socket server market.

Advanced Micro Devices is making it clear that its upcoming 45-nanometer processor for servers—”Shanghai”—will compete against what Intel brings to market with its new line of processors based on the upcoming “Nehalem” microarchitecture.

On the eve of the Intel Developer Forum, at an Aug. 15 press conference, AMD Senior Vice President Randy Allen said these 45-nm chips will ship in the fourth quarter of 2008, which means that some of AMD’s OEM partners could have early systems for sale by the end of the year.

Tropical storm lashes Cuba with winds, rain

By WILL WEISSERT

HAVANA (AP) - Tropical Storm Fay pounded Cuba with torrential rain and wind Monday, prompting authorities to evacuate dozens of low-lying communities, cancel carnival celebrations in a central of province and warn of flooding.

Forecasters said Fay, which earlier left at least five people dead in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, was on a path to cross Cuba early Monday and then pass near the Florida Keys that night.

A hurricane warning was issued for the capital, Havana, and eastward to Cuba’s central Sancti Spiritus province. A warning means a hurricane is possible within 36 hours.

Cuban state media reported little damage or major flooding so far, but authorities in four provinces evacuated nearly 5,000 residents from low-lying communities and pulled fishing boats from the water. Officials also set up temporary shelters and food distribution centers.

Pakistan’s Musharraf will resign

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who is facing impeachment by parliament, says he will resign.

The charges against the president include violation of the constitution and gross misconduct.

Mr Musharraf said he was confident that the charges against him would not stand but that this was not the time for more confrontation in Pakistan.

He has been one of the United States’ strongest allies in its war against Islamist extremism.

His political rivals swept to power last February in national and provincial elections after months of political confrontation and worsening militant violence.

‘No bravado’

Mr Musharraf announced his decision to resign in a live television address to the nation.

Looking calm and dressed soberly in a dark suit and tie, the embattled president said he had decided to resign after consulting his allies and advisors.

Mr Musharraf said his appeals for reconciliation with his opponents had fallen on deaf ears.

He was not afraid of the impeachment charges he is facing, he said. “Not a single charge can be proved against me.”

Malaysia’s Islamists want Lavigne concert canceled

By JULIA ZAPPEI

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Malaysia’s Islamic opposition party has urged the government to cancel a concert by Avril Lavigne, saying the Canadian singer’s on-stage moves are “too sexy,” an official said Monday.

Lavigne, a Grammy-nominated rock singer who burst to fame with her 2002 debut album “Let’s Go,” plans to start her monthlong Asia tour with a performance in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 29.

The youth wing of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said Lavigne’s concert would promote wrong values ahead of Malaysia’s Aug. 31 independence day.

“It is considered too sexy for us. … It’s not good for viewers in Malaysia,” said Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party official. “We don’t want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models.”

Georgia awaits Russia withdrawal

Russia is expected to begin withdrawing troops from Georgia, following a pledge by President Dmitry Medvedev.

But Moscow has said it has the right to keep some troops as peacekeepers in a buffer zone around South Ossetia.

Mr Medvedev promised to abide by the terms of a ceasefire brokered to end a week of fighting in Georgia and its breakaway province of South Ossetia.

The West has urged Moscow to pull out, and France said it would call a special EU summit if Russia did not comply.

Moscow - which has had peacekeepers in South Ossetia since 1992 - says it will only withdraw combat troops from Georgian territory once extra security measures are in place.

Monitoring call

Mr Medvedev made the withdrawal pledge on Sunday, in a telephone call to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who brokered last week’s ceasefire. Read the rest of this entry »

FPDIP: Pidato Presiden Tidak Jujur

Selain apologi, isi pidato sebagian besar hanya berupa klaim keberhasilan.

“Dapat kami katakan, pidato tersebut juga tidak jujur mengakui berbagai kekurangan atau kegagalan yang telah dilakukan pemerintah. Dengan demikian, substansi pidato tersebut cenderung hanya meninabobokan masyarakat dan masih saja dalam bingkai retorika `tebar pesona`,” katanya.

Aria Bima menambahkan, beragam persoalan yang terbengkelai dan belum di atasi pemerintah.
